Not all weekends can be great. A great weekend is subjective on whether you were looking to be productive or not, how the weather went, if your sports team did well, or a host of other variables. My weekend was a great weekend because the weather was warm all weekend for the first time in a long time. I spent almost the entire weekend outside blending a good mix of outdoor productivity and down time. I wanted to tell this weekend how wonderful it was several times, but I was fearful I would scare it away like one of the many birds that surround the house.

Speaking of birds, one of the times I did this weekend was install a bird feeder. I really am in my prime of old women hobbies. The hardware store had a huge selection of bird feeders in all different shapes and sizes, so I picked the one that looked most inviting and looked like a little old house cafe. As of now, I have not seen one single bird at the bird feeder…. But like all new restaurants, maybe it just needs a little time. I hope the birds accept my offering and look the other way in a few months when the garden is (hopefully!) overflowing.

I now have three raised beds put together, one has herbs and flowers planted. The other is in the fenced garden area, prepped and not planted, and the last one is in the middle of the side yard. Right now, that new one looks slightly out of place but like all things that just take a little time I suspect by summer it will look better. That part of the yard floods often so there is no grass and getting things to randomly grow over there without being hacked down by the mowers is tricky. Not impossible though. Now that there is a colorful raised bed there, I think planting alongside it will be easier. Don’t ask me why the mowers go over there anyway.

One of the things I love about nature is that nature always finds a way to grow wherever the wind takes it. I found this beautiful hyacinth growing alongside the bamboo which is a new addition this year. Daffodils pop up wherever they please and there is a lot of leafy greens all around that will be something soon… I know it. Waiting is the hard part. Things usually do not just show us all at once that they are beautiful, it takes time. I like to think this waiting period gives us a chance to notice that something is coming. Once we notice one thing taking shape, we start seeing things take shape everywhere. If a daffodil is starting to come up in my yard, they must be coming up all over! Noticing things taking shape also gives us something to look forward to. I think that is why all of the little flowers popping up before the weather truly turns warm gives us such hope. My favorite line from Star Wars is that “Rebellions are built on hope.” You can do anything with a little hope. I hope all weekends can be as great as this weekend was.
Tell me. What are you looking forward to this month? What makes a weekend great for you?
